Blair Hill
Dear Future Self,
Let me just say,
you are looking lovely today.
I hope you’re doing well ---
better than me, at least.
I hope you found a use for
that English degree that cost
$30,000 in ramen and sanity.
I’m sure you found something
that makes you feel complete,
even if it was just you.
I know you are wonderful,
and I hope you think so too.
Have you done all the things you wanted to?
Have you gone back to the ocean?
Have you visited your host father’s
church on that hillside in Italy?
Do you recall the sound of your own laugh?
I hope it still sounds often.
I hope you found that special someone.
You know, the one you’ve always looked for
in bookstores and coffee shops.
I hope he has large hands.
I want you to know
that I think about you.
All the time.
I hope you think about me less:
that your mind is otherwise occupied
with all the things you’re doing,
not all the things you didn’t.
Haven’t.
Remember to open your eyes.
Remember to listen to your breath.
Don’t stop.
Be free.
Love yourself.
Love,
Yourself
