My Review:
3
“I Have a Friend on Jupiter” is a sweet, slight little children’s novel. Indiana and Carlos are adorable in their earnest desire to befriend the aliens. The writing is accessible to children, featuring a simplistic villain and uncomplicated prose, while still occasionally showing flashes of sophistication—both children have interesting family dynamics, for example, though the author doesn’t delve too deeply into them. Periodic grammatical mistakes detract somewhat from the reading experience, but the story flows smoothly and quickly. Mariotti includes some subtle science lessons on Jupiter, something parents might appreciate. It’s an easy, pleasant, not-terribly-substantive read.
