ABOUT THE BOOK:
Bob Marr had been through a great deal in his young life. A Canadian, raised in Texas, he was a Vietnam War hero. A heavily-decorated veteran of the famous 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, he survived life-threatening injuries losing an eye and almost an arm to a rocket-propelled grenade. He left the hell of Vietnam physically and mentally broken, but he was finally home. He just wanted to make a normal life for himself. Yet here he was, lying handcuffed to a hospital bed with a hole in his back from a police bullet and a good chance that his final destination would be death row. How did things go so wrong? His mind was spinning with images of the shootout, Viet Cong soldiers jumping out from behind trees and the shattered bodies of the men he tried to put together as a field medic in the Vietnam jungle. What was happening in his head? If he lived beyond his 21 years, Marr would not have an easy ride in years to come. Father Hartmann Bottger, a Benedictine monk and priest, has confronted bullies his entire life, including pompous clerics, local thugs, and callous and corrupt French Army occupation authorities in the German Rhineland. But Father Hartmann faces his greatest challenges with the rise to power of the Nazi Party and the brutality of the dreaded Gestapo, which threaten the rights of the Church as well as the lives and spiritual beliefs of Father Harti and the members of his small village parish. The Humble Courier takes place in Germany during the turbulent years from the end of the Great War to the beginning of World War II. It is the story of a German soldier who believes he has been called to the Roman Catholic priesthood and tasked with fighting evil and protecting the weak from the strong. Although Father Hartmann initially employs passive resistance to fulfill what he perceives to be his mission, he comes to the conclusion that more aggressive—even violent—means are necessary to confront the awesome power of the SS and the Gestapo. Employing unlikely allies and extraordinary methods, Father Hartmann sets out to take the fight to his enemies, justifying his actions with St. Augustine’s proverb “Punishment is justice for the unjust.” REVIEWERS/BLOGGERS: Email Kristi at dreamingbigpublications@outlook.com to request your free PDF review copy today. She is a gorgeous pre-med student about to graduate from college and embark on the next stage of her idyllic life. Kat followed a meticulous, step-by-step plan to achieve her dreams. But Kat is about to encounter the real world, where planning, to-do lists, and calendars will only get her so far. Accompanied by her loyal sister, Angie, and with the support of her boyfriend, Mason, Kat journeys from California to New York to work in a research lab, in preparation for what she assumes will be a triumphant career in her chosen medical school. However, while pursuing her "dream," which she begins to question more and more with each passing day of her journey, Kat watches her perfectly planned life rapidly crumble as everything that could possibly go wrong, does, until she ultimately experiences the biggest rejection of her life from her dream medical school. But though she meets with such dramatic failure, Kat finds something better: the strength to persevere, to be resilient, and to figure out Plan B on the spot, when there is no time to strategize. It is only when life completely breaks Kat down and rips away all the factors making up her perfectly planned existence that Kat is finally set free from the cage she'd been unknowingly living in, and is ready to let her life naturally unfold as it may. Marnie Hunter seems to glide through life until that fateful night on a dark country road when the idealistic minister must reconcile theology, her Christian upbringing, and the real world. Marnie has reached an impasse. And until she comes to terms with her past and takes control of her present, the young cleric’s future is uncertain. Set in a contemporary church backdrop, Shadow Pastors profiles the life of a single female cleric as she attempts to navigate predominately male, often patriarchal spaces and balance romance, friendship, and family. ABOUT THE BOOK: Have you ever looked skyward and seen a helicopter taking off, wondering what, or who, they were working on? Have you ever said a silent prayer as an ambulance passes you, lights flashing and sirens blaring, knowing that it can’t be good? Have you ever seen crosses on the side of the road and crossed yourself, sending up a short prayer for not only the lost soul, but for those who were there that day? In my decade-plus-long career, I have seen both the good and the bad of the human body. I have had those calls where my partner and I have stood triumphant in the face of death, allowing someone’s parent, sibling, child, friend to live another day; where we are exhausted with the effort of battling certain doom. I have also had those calls – those horrific hours where it was known that we would fail, no matter how valiant our efforts. We have ended those calls covered in someone else’s blood and our own sweat, heads hung low and feet dragging as we returned, tails tucked, to our base. This is a collection of those calls – both good and bad – sharing my experience on the roller coaster of emergency medicine. I hope that you are ready to feel what I have felt; to see what I have seen. I hope you can handle the thick iron scent of blood on your boots, feel the trembling in your fingers as you try to pass a tiny tube into an infant’s trachea, and witness the crushed-spirit look of someone who has endured untold abuse. I hope you are ready and able to face sleepless nights as you fight Death himself; and that you can withstand missed meals and passed bathroom break opportunities.
